After Your Treatment

Botox & Anti-Wrinkle Injection Aftercare

For forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet, bunny lines, nose, pebbled chin, downturned mouth, masseter, Nefertiti lift, platysmal bands and underarm hyperhidrosis.

Please follow these instructions carefully after your treatment. Appropriate aftercare helps protect the injection sites, reduce unnecessary bruising and ensure that any possible side effect or complication is recognised promptly.

Botox is a brand name. Your treatment may use Botox or another authorised botulinum toxin type A product. The advice given by your practitioner and the information supplied with the exact medicine used take priority over this general guide.

A guide only — everyone responds at their own pace.

Managing your symptoms at home

Symptoms are usually minor — here's how to stay comfortable while the treatment develops:

Helps

  • Stay upright for ~4 hours; keep to gentle activity
  • Paracetamol for a mild headache
  • Arnica for a small bruise
  • A light wrapped cool pack (no pressure) over a bump

Skip

  • Rubbing or massaging the treated area
  • Exercise, heat & alcohol for 24 hours
  • Lying flat or face-down early on
  • Ibuprofen/aspirin early unless normally prescribed for you
The result builds over 1–2 weeks, so don't judge it yet. Contact us for a drooping eyelid or brow, or any swallowing, breathing or speech changes.

What is normal after treatment?

Normal

During the initial recovery period, it may be normal to experience:

Completely normal

  • Small raised bumps at injection sites
  • Pinpoint redness
  • Minor swelling
  • Mild tenderness
  • Stinging or sensitivity
  • Small spots of blood
  • Bruising
  • A mild headache
  • Temporary tightness
  • Mild numbness or tingling around an injection site
  • Temporary awareness of the injected muscles

The small bumps usually settle shortly after treatment. Bruising may appear immediately or during the following day. Pain, swelling, tenderness, redness, bleeding and bruising can occur following any injection. Headache, localised muscle weakness, skin tightness and temporary injection-site reactions are also recognised after cosmetic botulinum toxin treatment.

Do not judge the result immediately after treatment. The medicine does not work instantly.

During the first four hours

For approximately three to four hours after treatment:

Please avoid

  • Lying completely flat
  • Sleeping
  • Lying face-down
  • Prolonged bending with your head significantly below your heart
  • Activities that place direct pressure on the treated areas

Remain upright. These precautions are commonly advised in NHS aftercare guidance following botulinum toxin injections. You may sit, stand, walk gently and continue normal light daily activities.

Do not touch or massage the area (first four hours)

  • Do not rub the injection sites
  • Do not massage the treated muscles
  • Do not repeatedly press or examine the area
  • Do not use a facial roller or gua sha tool
  • Do not apply strong pressure while cleansing
  • Avoid tight hats, headbands or goggles pressing directly over facial injection points

Do not attempt to move the medicine or smooth out the injection sites. NHS guidance advises avoiding touching, rubbing or massaging injected areas because pressure may affect surrounding tissues.

During the first 24 hours

Avoid

  • Strenuous exercise, heavy gym sessions, running & high-intensity interval training
  • Heavy lifting
  • Hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs & sunbeds
  • Excessive heat
  • Vigorous facial massage & facial treatments
  • Massage treatments that require lying face-down
  • Tight helmets or equipment pressing over treated areas

Gentle walking and normal light activity are generally acceptable. NHS botulinum toxin aftercare guidance advises avoiding strenuous activity for 24 hours. Avoid alcohol for the remainder of the treatment day where possible, particularly if you are prone to bruising. Do not stop or alter prescribed medication, including blood-thinning medication, unless advised by the clinician who prescribed it.

Makeup and skincare

Allow the small injection points to close before applying makeup.

When applying

  • Wash your hands first
  • Use clean brushes or applicators
  • Apply products gently
  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas
  • Avoid strong exfoliating products over irritated injection sites
  • Avoid retinoids, acids or scrubs directly over broken or sensitive skin
  • Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it

Avoid facials, facial massage, gua sha, microcurrent treatment, radiofrequency, HIFU, microneedling, chemical peels and similar facial procedures until the injection sites have healed and your practitioner confirms that it is appropriate.

Exercise

Do not perform strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours. This includes:

Avoid

  • Running
  • Heavy weightlifting
  • High-intensity training
  • Inverted yoga positions
  • Vigorous cycling
  • Contact sport
  • Activities involving helmets or equipment pressing over the injection sites

You may return to activity gradually after this period if you feel well and your practitioner has not advised otherwise.

Heat and sun exposure

During the first 24 hours, avoid excessive heat that could worsen redness, swelling or bruising, including:

Avoid

  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Sunbeds
  • Very hot showers directly over the area
  • Intense sun exposure
  • Heated facial treatments

Do not apply ice directly to your skin. If cooling is recommended, use a clean, wrapped cool pack briefly without applying pressure.

Pain relief and medication

Minor tenderness or a mild headache may occur. If you require pain relief:

If you require pain relief

  • Use only medication that is normally safe for you
  • Ask your pharmacist or prescriber if you are uncertain
  • Do not take additional aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication solely for post-treatment discomfort unless it has been approved for you
  • Do not stop prescribed blood thinners
  • Do not take leftover prescription medication

Contact Layali Clinic if pain is severe, increasing, persistent or associated with significant swelling, weakness or visual symptoms.

When results develop

Anti-wrinkle injections work gradually. You may begin to notice a change during the first several days, but the response varies according to:

Response varies with

  • The product used
  • The dose
  • The treatment area
  • Muscle strength
  • Previous treatments
  • Individual response

For authorised cosmetic uses of Botox, improvement is generally noticed within the first week. Effects for forehead, frown and crow's-feet treatment have been demonstrated for around four months, although individual duration varies. Do not judge the result too early. A review is commonly performed at approximately two weeks, unless your practitioner has arranged a different review period based on the product used. Do not arrange an early top-up elsewhere. Too frequent or excessive botulinum toxin treatment may increase muscle weakness and may contribute to antibody formation, which can reduce future effectiveness.

Expected changes while the treatment develops

During the first one to two weeks, you may notice:

Expected changes

  • Increasing muscle relaxation
  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • One side beginning to work before the other
  • Temporary uneven movement
  • A different eyebrow shape
  • Reduced ability to make particular facial expressions
  • Mild asymmetry that may settle as the treatment fully develops

Do not repeatedly test the muscles throughout the day or assume an early difference requires immediate correction. Contact the clinic if you are concerned, but allow the appropriate settling period before assessing the final cosmetic outcome unless you develop a significant side effect.

Forehead, frown lines and crow's feet

Possible temporary effects include:

Possible temporary effects

  • Headache
  • Bruising
  • Forehead tightness
  • Eyebrow asymmetry
  • Raised outer eyebrows
  • Drooping eyebrow
  • Drooping upper eyelid
  • Eyelid swelling
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Blurred or double vision

Contact promptly if you develop

  • A drooping eyelid
  • A significantly lowered eyebrow
  • Difficulty opening an eye
  • Difficulty closing an eye completely
  • Persistent dry eye
  • Eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Any unexpected visual disturbance

Drooping eyelid or eyebrow may not appear immediately. In Botox clinical information, the median onset was reported at approximately nine days for eyelid drooping and five days for eyebrow drooping. Difficulty fully closing the eye can expose the surface of the eye and may require assessment and treatment. Do not self-treat eyelid drooping with borrowed or unprescribed eye drops.

Bunny lines, nose and Tinkerbell nose treatment

Possible temporary effects

  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Tightness
  • Altered movement while smiling
  • Slight asymmetry
  • Reduced nasal movement

Contact if you develop

  • A significant change in your smile
  • Difficulty moving the upper lip
  • Difficulty speaking clearly
  • Unexpected nasal weakness
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • A persistent or worsening asymmetry

Do not massage or manipulate the nose.

Pebbled chin, downturned mouth and lower-face treatment

Possible temporary effects

  • Chin tightness
  • Altered lip movement
  • Lower-face weakness
  • Smile asymmetry
  • Difficulty using a straw
  • Difficulty pronouncing certain words
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty keeping fluids within the mouth

Contact Layali Clinic if these effects are significant, worsening or interfering with eating, drinking or speech. Seek urgent medical help if lower-face weakness is accompanied by generalised weakness, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech or breathing difficulty.

Masseter and jaw-clenching treatment

You may experience

  • Tenderness at the injection sites
  • Mild bruising
  • Temporary jaw tiredness
  • Reduced biting strength
  • Mild discomfort when chewing
  • Temporary facial asymmetry
  • A change in smile movement
  • Temporary prominence or uneven contraction of part of the masseter muscle

For the first 24 hours

  • Avoid very hard or chewy foods if your jaw feels tired
  • Avoid chewing gum
  • Do not massage the jaw
  • Avoid facial massage over the masseters
  • Do not repeatedly clench your jaw to test the treatment

NHS guidance for botulinum toxin used in jaw-muscle treatment advises avoiding hard or chewy food for the first 24 hours.

Contact if you develop

  • Significant difficulty chewing
  • Marked smile asymmetry
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Increasing jaw pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Speech changes
  • Progressive facial weakness

The functional effect may be noticed before a visible reduction in jaw width. Changes in facial contour take longer to assess than muscle relaxation.

Nefertiti lift and platysmal-band treatment

Call 999

Treatment to the neck and lower-face muscles requires particular attention because unwanted muscle weakness may affect swallowing, speech, voice, lower-lip movement, smile movement and neck strength. Difficulty swallowing and lower-face weakness are recognised potential effects following botulinum toxin treatment of vertical neck bands.

Contact urgently — call 999 immediately if you develop

  • Difficulty swallowing food or fluids
  • Choking or coughing while drinking
  • A change in your voice
  • Slurred speech
  • Significant lower-face weakness
  • Difficulty controlling saliva
  • Neck weakness
  • Shortness of breath
Call 999 immediately if swallowing or breathing is significantly affected.

Underarm hyperhidrosis treatment

You may experience

  • Injection-site pain
  • Tenderness
  • Minor swelling
  • Bruising
  • Burning or increased sensitivity
  • Temporary numbness
  • Itching
  • A small lump beneath the skin

For the remainder of the treatment day

  • Avoid rubbing the underarms
  • Avoid shaving the injected areas
  • Avoid fragranced deodorant over irritated injection points
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat
  • Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing

Improvement in underarm sweating is generally noticed during the first week. For authorised Botox treatment, the average effect after the first treatment is reported to last approximately four to seven months, although this varies. Possible effects can include increased sweating elsewhere, abnormal skin odour, itching, temporary hair loss, arm discomfort and localised muscle weakness.

Contact if you develop

  • Significant arm weakness
  • Persistent numbness
  • Increasing redness or warmth
  • Pus or discharge
  • A painful enlarging lump
  • Fever or feeling unwell

Bruising

Small bruises can occur and may become more visible the day after treatment. To reduce irritation:

To reduce irritation

  • Do not massage the bruise
  • Avoid strong pressure
  • Avoid excessive heat
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours
  • Do not stop prescribed medication

Contact Layali Clinic if bruising is rapidly spreading, associated with significant swelling or accompanied by severe pain.

Infection warning signs

Contact us

Infection is uncommon but can occur after any injection. Contact promptly if you develop:

Contact the clinic if…

  • Increasing redness
  • Increasing heat
  • Increasing swelling
  • Throbbing pain
  • Pus or discharge
  • An open or non-healing injection site
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Feeling generally unwell

Do not squeeze the area, apply leftover antibiotics or attempt to drain an injection site yourself.

Drooping, asymmetry or unwanted muscle weakness

Botulinum toxin temporarily weakens muscles. Occasionally, a nearby muscle may be affected or the response may differ between sides. Possible changes:

Possible changes

  • Eyelid drooping
  • Eyebrow drooping
  • Raised outer eyebrow
  • Smile asymmetry
  • Lower-lip weakness
  • Difficulty pursing the lips
  • Jaw weakness
  • Difficulty closing an eye
  • Neck weakness
  • Altered speech
  • Difficulty swallowing

Contact Layali Clinic so the area can be properly assessed. Do not seek immediate corrective injections from another provider before your original treatment has been reviewed. Some effects cannot be instantly reversed and may need to improve gradually as the medicine wears off.

Severe allergic reaction

Call 999

A severe allergic reaction is rare but requires urgent treatment.

Call 999 immediately if…

  • Swelling of the tongue or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Widespread hives
  • Rapid facial swelling
  • Severe dizziness
  • Feeling faint
  • Collapse
Severe hypersensitivity symptoms reported with botulinum toxin include facial or throat swelling, wheezing, breathlessness, hives and faintness. Do not wait for the clinic to respond before calling emergency services when breathing or swallowing is affected.

Important warning: spread of botulinum toxin effect

Call 999

In very rare cases, the effects of botulinum toxin can spread beyond the injected muscles and cause symptoms consistent with iatrogenic botulism. Symptoms may begin hours, days or weeks after treatment. The MHRA advises that symptoms can develop up to four weeks following therapeutic or cosmetic botulinum toxin treatment.

Seek immediate medical advice for generalised muscle weakness; unusual weakness away from the treatment area; difficulty swallowing; choking or coughing when eating or drinking; slurred speech; difficulty speaking; voice changes; difficulty breathing; shortness of breath; drooping of both eyelids; double vision; difficulty holding your head upright; extreme weakness or exhaustion; or food or liquid entering the airway.

Call 999 immediately if…

  • You are struggling to breathe
  • You cannot swallow safely
  • You are choking
  • Your speech suddenly becomes severely affected
  • You develop rapidly worsening or generalised muscle weakness
  • You collapse or lose consciousness
Difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking can be life-threatening and requires immediate assessment. Tell the emergency team: you recently received botulinum toxin type A; the date of treatment; the areas treated; the product name, if known; the dose, if known; and your practitioner's and clinic's details.

Driving

Do not drive if you experience:

Do not drive if you experience

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Drooping affecting your sight
  • Dizziness
  • Generalised weakness
  • Difficulty controlling your head or neck
  • Any symptom that could affect safe driving

Arrange alternative transport and seek clinical advice.

Flying and travel

Flying does not normally require a prolonged restriction solely because botulinum toxin has been administered. However:

Before you travel

  • Do not travel immediately if you feel unwell
  • Avoid travelling somewhere where you cannot obtain medical care if you are experiencing an unexpected symptom
  • Keep the clinic contact details and treatment information with you
  • Seek advice before travel if treatment involved your neck, swallowing muscles or a large therapeutic dose

Follow-up and review

Attend your planned review appointment where offered. The review may include:

At your review we may

  • Assess muscle movement
  • Compare symmetry
  • Review the cosmetic result
  • Examine any unwanted weakness
  • Discuss whether any additional treatment is appropriate
  • Record side effects
  • Update your clinical photographs

Do not arrange a top-up before the medicine has had appropriate time to take effect. Additional treatment should only be provided following assessment and should not be automatic. Contact the clinic earlier if you experience a side effect or complication. Do not wait for a routine review when you have swallowing, breathing, speech, eye or significant muscle-weakness symptoms.
