After Your Treatment
Titan X / HIFU Aftercare & Recovery
For non-invasive skin tightening, lifting and body contouring on the face, neck and body — jawline, double chin, décolletage, breasts, abdomen, arms, thighs, knees and buttocks.
This guide applies to Titan X treatments performed on the face, neck and body.
Titan X uses focused-ultrasound energy and, depending on the protocol, radiofrequency to create controlled thermal stimulation at selected tissue depths. The response develops gradually as the treated tissue heals and collagen remodels. Follow the instructions given by your practitioner for your exact treatment area, cartridge depths, settings and treatment mode. These take priority over general online advice.
Clinic contact
Contact the clinic promptly if you are concerned about any symptom, even if you are unsure whether it is normal.
For a non-urgent concern, or if you are unsure whether something needs attention, you can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7).
Call 999 or attend A&E for a severe allergic reaction, sudden neurological symptoms, severe facial weakness, significant breathing or swallowing difficulty, or any rapidly developing medical emergency.
Your recovery, at a glance
01
Day of treatment
Mild redness, swelling, warmth & tenderness are common. Keep the area clean, use SPF and avoid heat.
02
First 24–48 hours
Avoid heat, exercise & strong skincare. Use SPF 30+ and lukewarm water when washing.
03
First 1–2 weeks
Redness & tenderness settle. You may notice an initial tightness in the treated area.
04
Weeks 3–12
Collagen remodels; gradual lifting & firming appear over these weeks.
05
Beyond 12 weeks
Remodelling continues. Attend your review and plan any repeat session.
A guide only — everyone heals at their own pace.
Managing your symptoms at home
Redness, warmth and tenderness are expected — here's how to stay comfortable:
Helps
- A gentle fragrance-free moisturiser
- Daily SPF 30+ and lukewarm water
- A light wrapped cool pack for tenderness
- Paracetamol if needed; rest
Skip
- Heat — saunas & hot showers — for 48 hours
- Strong actives (retinol, acids) for 48 hours
- Vigorous massage, gua sha & massage guns
- Strenuous exercise while the area is tender
Tenderness can last a few days and the lift builds over 3–12 weeks. Contact us for blistering, a burn, or increasing/extensive numbness.
What is normal after treatment?
Normal
Titan X and HIFU treatments are non-invasive, but the energy delivered beneath the skin can cause temporary tissue sensitivity. It may be normal to experience:
Completely normal
- Mild redness
- Mild swelling
- Tenderness
- A warm or heated sensation
- Skin sensitivity
- A bruised or aching feeling
- Tingling
- Temporary numbness or altered sensation
- Mild firmness
- Small raised areas or temporary welts
- Mild bruising
- Tenderness when touching the skin
- Tenderness when moving facial or body muscles
- A tight or slightly heavy feeling
- Temporary sensitivity along the jawline or over bony areas
Redness and swelling commonly settle within several hours to a few days. Tenderness or a bruised sensation beneath the skin may last longer, particularly following deeper or higher-energy treatment. Transient redness, swelling and discomfort are the most frequently reported effects following cosmetic focused-ultrasound treatment. A recent facial microfocused-ultrasound study reported that temporary muscle tenderness could last several days, despite no major complications occurring. Contact the clinic if symptoms are severe, worsening or not improving as expected.
Immediately after treatment
Do
- Keep the treated area clean
- Use clean hands when touching your skin
- Drink water normally and remain hydrated
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing following body treatment
- Use a gentle moisturiser if advised
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed treated areas
- Rest if you feel light-headed or uncomfortable
- Keep your clinic contact details available
- Follow any specific advice provided for your treatment area
Do not
- Rub, scratch or repeatedly press the treated area
- Massage the area unless specifically advised
- Apply strong pressure
- Use a facial roller, gua sha tool or massage gun
- Apply heat packs or hot-water bottles
- Apply ice directly to the skin
- Use harsh skincare on irritated skin
- Try to "test" the result by repeatedly pulling or pressing the skin
During the first 24–48 hours
Avoid anything that significantly heats, irritates or compresses the treated area:
Avoid
- Saunas
- Steam rooms
- Hot tubs
- Very hot baths
- Very hot showers
- Sunbeds
- Intense sun exposure
- Heated blankets directly over the area
- Heated car seats against a treated body area
- Vigorous massage
- Gua sha
- Facial rollers
- Massage guns
- Tight or restrictive clothing
- Fragranced or irritating body products
- Strong exfoliation
- Other energy-based treatments
Titan X's published aftercare advises avoiding excessive heat for 48 hours, maintaining hydration, moisturising and using daily broad-spectrum SPF. Use lukewarm rather than very hot water when washing or showering.
Exercise
Gentle walking and normal light activity are usually acceptable if you feel comfortable. For the first 24–48 hours, avoid strenuous activity if the treated area remains warm, swollen, tender or sensitive:
Avoid
- Running
- Heavy weightlifting
- High-intensity interval training
- Hot yoga
- Intense cycling
- Contact sport
- Heavy chest exercises following breast or décolletage treatment
- Heavy abdominal exercises following abdominal treatment
- Repeated squats or hip thrusts following buttock or thigh treatment
Exercise increases body temperature and may make early redness, swelling or tenderness more noticeable. Return to strenuous exercise gradually. Stop and contact the clinic if activity causes increasing pain, swelling, numbness, weakness or skin changes.
Washing, skincare and makeup
Cleansing: cleanse gently, with clean hands, lukewarm water and a mild non-exfoliating cleanser, then pat dry.
Makeup: where the skin surface is intact, makeup may usually be applied once redness and sensitivity have settled (waiting until the following day is preferable if irritated). Use clean brushes, clean sponges, fresh products and light pressure. Do not apply over blistered, broken or damaged skin.
Skincare: for approximately 48 hours, or until sensitivity settles, avoid:
Avoid
- Retinoids
- Tretinoin
- Retinol
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Strong vitamin C products
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Scrubs
- Exfoliating brushes
- Chemical exfoliants
- Strong fragranced products
- Home microneedling
- Peeling products
Use a gentle moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 on exposed areas. Titan X's published guidance recommends daily SPF 30 or higher.
Sun and tanning
The treated area may be temporarily more sensitive.
Avoid
- Sunbeds
- Deliberate tanning
- Prolonged direct sunlight
- Fake tan over irritated skin
- Chemical tanning products until sensitivity settles
Use
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
- A hat after facial treatment
- Protective clothing over body areas
- Regular sunscreen reapplication when outdoors
Contact the clinic if you develop persistent darkening, lightening or an unusual change in skin colour.
Cooling the area
If recommended
- Use a clean cool pack wrapped in a soft cloth
- Apply it briefly
- Do not press firmly
- Allow breaks between applications
- Stop if cooling increases numbness or discomfort
Do not
- Apply ice directly to the skin
- Leave a frozen pack in place for a prolonged period
- Use extreme cold
- Fall asleep with a cooling pack on the treated area
Pain relief and medication
Mild tenderness or a bruised sensation may occur.
- Use only pain relief normally safe for you
- Ask a pharmacist, prescriber or practitioner when uncertain
- Do not stop prescribed medication
- Do not stop prescribed aspirin or blood-thinning medication without advice
- Do not take leftover prescription medication
- Do not apply unprescribed steroid or antibiotic cream
Contact the clinic rather than masking symptoms if you develop
- Severe pain
- Increasing pain
- Burning pain
- Electric-shock-like pain
- Pain associated with weakness
- Pain associated with blistering or skin-colour change
Massage and lymphatic drainage
Do not massage the treated area unless specifically recommended.
Avoid
- Deep tissue massage
- Facial massage
- Gua sha
- Facial rollers
- Massage guns
- Cupping
- Firm lymphatic drainage
- Mechanical body massage
- Vacuum or suction treatments
Massage guidance may differ depending on whether treatment was for skin tightening, facial lifting, fat reduction, cellulite or body contouring. Where massage or lymphatic drainage is recommended, your practitioner should specify when to begin, which area, the pressure, the duration, the frequency and when to stop. Stop and contact the clinic if massage causes pain, swelling, bruising, numbness or skin-colour changes.
Normal tenderness and altered sensation
Focused ultrasound may temporarily affect sensory nerves within or near the treated area. You may experience:
May be normal
- Tingling
- Pins and needles
- Mild numbness
- Increased sensitivity
- Reduced sensitivity
- A tender or bruised feeling
- Short, sharp sensations
- Sensitivity when touching the jaw or face
These symptoms should gradually improve. Rare reported effects of microfocused ultrasound include dysaesthesia, focal numbness, hypersensitivity and temporary nerve-related symptoms.
Contact the clinic if
- Numbness is increasing
- Numbness is extensive
- Sensation does not begin to improve
- You develop muscle weakness
- You experience severe nerve-like pain
- You develop drooping or altered facial movement
Facial and jawline treatment
Temporarily, you may notice:
Temporarily
- Redness
- Swelling

Neck treatment
You may experience:
May be normal
- Tenderness
- Tightness
- Mild swelling
- Sensitivity when turning the head
- Mild discomfort beneath the jaw
- Temporary altered sensation
Contact urgently if you develop
- Significant neck weakness
- Increasing neck swelling
- Difficulty swallowing
- Choking when eating or drinking
- Voice changes
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe or increasing pain
- Significant lower-face weakness
Call 999 if breathing or swallowing is significantly affected.
Abdominal and body treatment
The following may be normal:
Normal
- Localised tenderness
- Mild swelling
- A bruised sensation
- Firmness
- Temporary numbness
- Tingling
- Sensitivity during movement
- Mild discomfort when clothing presses against the area
Wear loose clothing and avoid strong pressure while the area remains tender.
Following abdominal treatment
- Avoid tight waist trainers
- Avoid restrictive shapewear
- Avoid heavy abdominal training until tenderness settles
- Do not repeatedly pinch or press the treated tissue
- Avoid massage guns and aggressive body massage
Following arm or thigh treatment
- Avoid tight sleeves or leggings
- Avoid high-impact exercise while tender
- Avoid massage or body-contouring devices until approved
Clinical studies of body HIFU report temporary discomfort but generally minimal recovery time; however, settings and protocols vary, so your practitioner's advice remains essential.
Buttock treatment
Following buttock lifting or tightening treatment:
Following buttock treatment
- Wear loose clothing
- Avoid tight compression garments unless instructed
- Avoid massage guns
- Avoid aggressive gluteal massage
- Avoid very hot baths and heated seats
- Reduce prolonged direct pressure if the area is tender
- Avoid intense glute exercises until discomfort settles
- Return to squats, lunges and hip thrusts gradually
Contact the clinic if you develop severe pain, extensive numbness, muscle weakness, blistering or an unexpected contour change.
Breast and décolletage treatment
Following treatment of the breasts or chest:
Following breast or chest treatment
- Wear a comfortable, non-restrictive bra if support is needed
- Avoid very tight or heavily compressive bras
- Avoid underwires pressing on tender skin
- Avoid sleeping face-down while tender
- Avoid vigorous breast massage
- Avoid heavy chest exercise until discomfort settles
- Avoid heat over the breasts
- Avoid other breast treatments until cleared
Contact if you develop
- Severe or increasing breast pain
- Rapidly increasing one-sided swelling
- Significant breast asymmetry that develops suddenly
- Blistering
- Skin breakdown
- A new persistent lump
- Nipple discharge
- Skin dimpling
- A change in nipple position
- Redness, heat, fever or feeling unwell
A new breast lump or unexplained breast change should not automatically be attributed to the treatment. It may require assessment by your GP or a breast service. Titan X's manufacturer describes breast tightening as a device treatment area, but your practitioner's exact protocol and the device's current instructions must determine the permitted area and depth.
Burns and surface injury
Contact us
HIFU works below the skin surface, so blisters, open wounds and significant burns are not expected normal recovery symptoms. Rare serious complications reported after microfocused ultrasound include:
Rare serious complications
- Blistering

- Facial volume loss
- A new indentation
- Uneven fat reduction
- Visible contour irregularity
- Tissue thinning
- An unexpected change in facial or body shape

When results develop
Titan X does not provide the same result as surgery, and results are not immediate or guaranteed. You may notice:
You may notice
- Temporary initial tightness
- Gradual improvement in skin firmness
- Gradual lifting
- Progressive collagen remodelling
- Gradual body-contouring changes where fat-targeting settings were used
The Titan X manufacturer states that the most significant changes generally develop over approximately 3–12 weeks, with collagen remodelling continuing beyond the initial treatment period. Research on cosmetic HIFU also shows results commonly develop gradually over several weeks to months rather than immediately.
The outcome depends on
- Age
- Skin quality
- Degree of laxity
- Treatment area
- Tissue thickness
- Energy and depth used
