Please follow these instructions carefully after your treatment. Appropriate aftercare helps protect the injection sites, supports recovery and ensures that possible complications are recognised promptly.
Mesotox — also called Microbotox or Mesobotox — uses multiple small superficial injections of diluted botulinum toxin type A to soften fine lines, reduce oil, refine pores and give a subtle smoothing effect while preserving natural movement. This is commonly an off-label use of botulinum toxin, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed. The advice given by your practitioner for the exact product, dilution and technique used, together with the information provided with the medicine, takes priority over this general guide.
Clinic contact
Contact the clinic promptly if you are concerned about any symptom, even if you are unsure whether it is normal.
For a non-urgent concern, or if you are unsure whether something needs attention, you can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7).
Call 999 immediately for difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, rapidly developing generalised weakness, collapse or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

Managing your symptoms at home
Symptoms are usually minor — here's how to stay comfortable:
Helps
- Stay upright for ~4 hours
- A gentle cleanser and light moisturiser once the points close
- A light wrapped cool pack
- Paracetamol if needed; daily SPF
Skip
- Rubbing or massaging the skin
- Actives (retinol, acids) for 24–48 hours
- Makeup until the tiny bumps settle
- Exercise & heat for 24 hours
The little bumps flatten within hours and the effect builds over 1–2 weeks. Contact us for drooping, or any swallowing, breathing or speech changes.
What is normal immediately after Mesotox
Normal
Because Mesotox involves many superficial injections, you may initially experience:
Completely normal
- Multiple small raised bumps or wheals
- Pinpoint redness
- Mild swelling
- Small needle marks
- Mild stinging or burning
- Tenderness
- Minor bleeding
- Small bruises
- Mild itching
- Temporary tightness
- Temporary sensitivity
- A mild headache
- Slight temporary unevenness caused by swelling
- Mild dryness or altered oil production as the treatment develops
The small raised bumps normally begin flattening within several hours. Redness and mild swelling commonly settle within the same day or over the following one to two days. Injection-site pain, swelling, burning, stinging, tenderness, redness, bleeding and bruising are recognised possible effects of botulinum toxin injections.
Do not judge your final result immediately. Contact Layali Clinic if swelling, pain or redness is severe, rapidly worsening or not improving as expected.
During the first four hours
For approximately three to four hours after treatment:
Avoid
- Lying completely flat
- Sleeping face-down
- Prolonged bending with your head significantly below your heart
- Rubbing or massaging the treated areas
- Repeatedly pressing or examining the injection sites
- Tight hats, headbands, goggles or masks pressing on the treated skin
- Facial rollers, gua sha tools and massage devices
- Facial treatments
- Applying heavy pressure while cleansing
Remain upright. You may sit, stand, walk gently and continue normal light daily activities. NHS aftercare guidance commonly advises avoiding rubbing or massaging treated areas, remaining upright for approximately three to four hours and avoiding strenuous activity for 24 hours. If a small injection point bleeds, gently dab it with clean gauze or tissue. Do not press or massage firmly.
During the first 24 hours
Avoid the following for the first 24 hours:
Avoid
- Strenuous exercise, running, heavy weightlifting & high-intensity training
- Hot yoga & vigorous dancing
- Saunas, steam rooms & hot tubs
- Sunbeds
- Very hot showers & excessive heat
- Facial massage, gua sha, facial rollers & microcurrent devices
- Tight facial straps
- Massage treatments requiring you to lie face-down
- Alcohol where possible, particularly if you bruise easily
Normal light activity and gentle walking are acceptable if you feel well. Do not stop prescribed medication, including blood-thinning medication, unless advised by the clinician who prescribed it.
Cleansing, makeup and skincare
Cleansing: wash your hands before touching your face, use lukewarm water and a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser, and pat the skin dry with a clean towel. Do not scrub or use a cleansing brush, and avoid rubbing or applying firm pressure.
Makeup: avoid makeup until the injection points have closed and the raised bumps have settled. Waiting until the following day is preferable where possible.
When applying makeup, do
- Use clean brushes or applicators
- Apply products gently
When applying makeup, avoid
- Old or shared makeup
- Applying makeup over broken, bleeding or irritated skin
For approximately 24–48 hours, or until irritation has settled, avoid the following active skincare:
Avoid
- Retinol, tretinoin & prescription retinoids
- Glycolic acid & salicylic acid
- Strong vitamin C
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Chemical exfoliants, facial scrubs & peeling products
- Strong fragranced products
- Home microneedling & dermaplaning
- Waxing or threading over treated areas
Use a gentle moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen once the injection points have closed.
Exercise, heat and sun exposure
Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours. Avoid excessive heat for approximately 24–48 hours, including:
Avoid
- Saunas, steam rooms & hot tubs
- Sunbeds
- Very hot baths
- Heated facial devices
- Prolonged direct sunlight
Use suitable sun protection after treatment. Do not deliberately tan irritated or bruised skin. Do not apply ice directly to the face. If cooling has been recommended, use a clean, wrapped cool pack briefly and without firm pressure.
Do not massage the treatment
Do not
- Massage the face or neck
- Press the raised bumps
- Attempt to spread the product
- Use a facial roller
- Use gua sha
- Use a massage gun
- Arrange lymphatic drainage over the area
- Book a facial massage immediately after treatment
- Ask another practitioner to manipulate the treated areas
Rubbing or pressure may affect nearby tissues and increase the possibility of unwanted local muscle weakness.
When results develop
Mesotox does not work immediately. You may begin noticing changes over the first several days. The botulinum toxin effect generally develops over approximately one to two weeks. Changes in skin texture, oil production, pore appearance or fine lines may continue developing over several weeks. Duration varies according to:
Duration depends on
- Product used
- Dilution
- Dose
- Number of injection points
- Treatment depth
- Treatment area
- Skin type
- Muscle activity
- Individual response
Research into intradermal botulinum toxin uses different products, concentrations, doses and treatment patterns, so no exact result or duration can be guaranteed. A review is generally most useful once the treatment has fully developed, usually at approximately two weeks unless your practitioner advises otherwise. Do not arrange an early top-up elsewhere.
Temporary skin and facial changes
As the treatment develops, you may temporarily notice:
May be temporary
- Skin feeling tighter
- Reduced oil production
- Dryness
- Slight changes in facial movement
- One side responding before the other
- Temporary facial asymmetry
- A mild heavy feeling
- Changes when smiling
- Reduced movement around the lower face
- Temporary tightness around the eyes or mouth
Contact Layali Clinic if these changes are significant, worsening or interfere with normal function. Although Mesotox is placed superficially, the toxin can still affect underlying or neighbouring muscles. Published Microbotox studies report facial asymmetry and minor bruising, and facial weakness has occurred following intradermal cheek treatment.
Forehead and brow treatment
Possible temporary effects
- Forehead tightness
- Headache
- Brow asymmetry
- A raised outer eyebrow
- A lowered eyebrow
- A heavy forehead
- Eyelid drooping
Contact promptly if you develop
- A significantly drooping eyebrow
- A drooping eyelid
- Difficulty opening an eye
- A change that interferes with your vision
- Significant or worsening asymmetry
Do not self-treat drooping with borrowed or unprescribed eye drops.
Eye and under-eye treatment
May experience
- Mild swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Dryness
- Irritation
- Increased watering
- Temporary tightness
Contact promptly if you develop
- Difficulty closing an eye
- Significant dry eye
- Persistent eye irritation
- Eye pain
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Eyelid drooping
- Unexpected swelling that is increasing
Dry eye, altered eyelid position, blurred vision and double vision are recognised potential botulinum toxin effects and require assessment when persistent or significant. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden or severe visual symptoms.
Cheeks, mid-face and lower-face treatment
Following treatment of the cheeks, around the mouth or lower face, unwanted temporary weakness may affect:
May affect
- Smiling
- Lip movement

- Voice changes
- Slurred speech
- Significant lower-face weakness
- Neck weakness
- Difficulty holding your head upright
- Shortness of breath
Call 999 immediately if breathing or swallowing is significantly affected.
Bruising
Small bruises are common because Mesotox uses multiple injection points. Bruising may appear immediately or the following day, become darker before fading, be more noticeable around the eyes, and take several days to approximately two weeks to resolve. Do not massage bruises.
Contact if bruising is
- Rapidly spreading
- Associated with severe pain
- Associated with significant swelling
- Accompanied by skin breakdown
- Accompanied by feeling faint or unwell
Infection warning signs
Contact us
Infection is uncommon but can occur after any injection procedure. Contact Layali Clinic promptly if you develop:
Signs of infection
- Redness that is increasing or spreading
- Increasing heat
- Increasing swelling
- Throbbing or worsening pain
- Pus or discharge
- An open or non-healing injection site
- Fever
- Chills
- Feeling generally unwell
- Symptoms that improve and then worsen
Do not squeeze an injection point, attempt to drain the area, apply leftover antibiotics, cover an infected area with makeup, or delay seeking advice.
Severe allergic reaction
Call 999
Call 999 immediately if you experience
A severe allergic reaction is rare but requires immediate treatment.
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Widespread hives
- Rapid facial swelling
- Severe dizziness
- Feeling faint
- Collapse
Botulinum toxin product information advises immediate medical attention for breathing or swallowing problems and symptoms of severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for the clinic to respond when breathing or swallowing is affected.
Important warning: spread of toxin effect
Call 999
Seek immediate medical attention for
In rare cases, the effect of botulinum toxin may spread beyond the treated area and cause symptoms of iatrogenic botulism. Symptoms most commonly appear within approximately four to eight days, but they may develop at any point up to four weeks after treatment. The MHRA strengthened UK warnings about this risk on 15 July 2026.
- Generalised muscle weakness
- Weakness away from the treated area
- Severe drooping of both eyelids
- Double or blurred vision
- Difficulty swallowing
- Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty speaking
- Voice changes
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty holding your head upright
- Extreme or unusual weakness
- Food or liquid entering the airway
Call 999 immediately if: you are struggling to breathe; you cannot swallow safely; you are choking; speech suddenly becomes significantly affected; you develop rapidly worsening generalised weakness; or you collapse or lose consciousness.
Tell the emergency team: you recently received botulinum toxin type A; the treatment was an intradermal Mesotox or Microbotox technique; the treatment date; the areas treated; the product name and dose, if known; and your practitioner's and clinic's contact details.
Driving
Do not drive if you experience:
Do not drive if you have
- Blurred or double vision
- Eyelid drooping affecting sight
- Dizziness
- Significant facial or neck weakness
- Generalised muscle weakness
- Any symptom that could affect safe driving
Arrange alternative transport and seek medical advice.
Other facial treatments
Do not undergo another facial treatment over the same area until the injection sites have healed and your practitioner confirms it is appropriate. This includes:
Wait until healed for
- Facial massage
- Microneedling
- Chemical peels
- Dermaplaning
- Laser treatment
- Radiofrequency
- HIFU
- Endolaser
- Microcurrent
- Facial waxing
- Threads
- Dermal filler
- Skin boosters
- Additional Mesotox or botulinum toxin
The appropriate interval depends on the procedure, products used and your skin's recovery.
