Doing everything right, but still noticing…

  • A double chin that won't budge, however slim you get
  • A little pocket on the lower tummy
  • Softness on the inner or outer thighs
  • "Bingo wings" on the upper arms
  • Love handles that spoil the line of your clothes

Some fat is simply stubborn — it clings on in small pockets no matter how carefully you eat or how hard you train. That doesn't always mean surgery.

Fat-dissolving injections (injectable lipolysis) are a non-surgical way to target those small, defined pockets. A solution is injected directly into the fat, where it breaks down the fat-cell membranes so the body can gradually clear the contents away.

No surgery No general anaesthetic Walk-in, walk-out

One honest thing first

Fat-dissolving injections are not a weight-loss treatment and not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. They are best for people who are already at or near their target weight and simply want to refine a small, stubborn area. If you're looking to lose a significant amount of weight, this isn't the right treatment — and we'll tell you so honestly at your consultation.

How do fat-dissolving injections work?

The treatment uses an injectable solution based on deoxycholic acid or a similar fat-dissolving compound. At Layali Clinic we use Lipolab for body areas (tummy, thighs, arms, love handles) and V Line Slim for the double chin (submental area). Deoxycholic acid is a substance the body naturally uses to help break down dietary fat.

Step by step, inside the tissue

  • The solution is injected in a grid of small points directly into the pocket of fat.
  • It disrupts the membrane (outer wall) of the fat cells in that area.
  • The fat cells break open and release their stored contents.
  • Your body's natural clearance system gradually removes the released fat over the following weeks.
  • Because the fat cells themselves are destroyed, the reduction in that pocket is long-lasting.

This gradual clearance is why results take several weeks to appear, and why the area often swells noticeably for a while first — that swelling is part of the process, not a sign anything is wrong.

Which areas can be treated?

Fat-dissolving injections work best on small, defined pockets of pinchable fat. Suitable areas include:

Face & neck

  • Double chin (submental fat)

Body

  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs
  • Upper abdomen
  • Lower abdomen
  • Bingo wings (upper arms)
  • Love handles / flanks

Your practitioner will assess whether your particular area is suitable, and may recommend a different treatment if it isn't.

Is it right for me?

You may be a good candidate if you

  • Are at or near your target weight
  • Have a small, stubborn, pinchable pocket of fat
  • Eat reasonably well and are active
  • Have good skin quality (not very loose skin)
  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Understand more than one session is usually needed

It is NOT suitable if you

  • Are looking for weight loss or want to treat a large area
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an infection or broken skin in the area
  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder
  • Have significant liver or kidney disease
  • Have an autoimmune condition (unless cleared)
  • Have very loose skin that would sag once fat is reduced

A consultation will determine suitability, and treatment may be declined if it is not safe or appropriate.

How many sessions will I need?

Fat-dissolving is a course of treatments, not a one-off. Most areas need 2–4 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the area, the amount of fat and how your body responds. Your practitioner will recommend a plan at your consultation.

When results appear

  • The area swells first — this settles over 1–2 weeks
  • Early change is usually visible over the following weeks
  • Full result from each session at around 8–12 weeks
  • Progress builds session on session

How long results last

  • Treated fat cells are permanently reduced
  • The reduction in that pocket is long-lasting
  • But remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight
  • A stable weight keeps your result looking its best

Recovery at a glance

Day 1–3

Significant swelling (especially under the chin), tenderness, redness — this is expected.

Day 3–5

Swelling often peaks, then begins to settle.

Week 1–2

Most swelling and bruising settle; firmness may remain.

Weeks 4–6

Next session, if planned.

Week 8–12

Full result from the session becomes visible.

A guide only — everyone heals at their own pace.

What's the downtime?

Most people return to normal daily activities straight away. The main thing to plan around is swelling, which can be significant — particularly under the chin, where it can look and feel quite pronounced for several days to a couple of weeks.

Plan ahead: we recommend allowing around 1–2 weeks before any important event, wedding, holiday or photos — especially if you're treating the chin.

Side effects & risks

Fat-dissolving injections are generally well tolerated, but it is a medical injectable treatment and all treatments carry risk. We explain everything fully at your consultation.

Common & expected

  • Significant swelling (especially under the chin)
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness & soreness
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Firmness, lumps or nodules that settle
  • Temporary numbness in the area

Important / less common risks

  • Nerve injury — near the jaw, the marginal mandibular nerve can be affected, causing a temporary uneven or lopsided smile
  • Skin ulceration or tissue damage (necrosis) if injected too superficially
  • Prolonged swelling or persistent nodules
  • Infection or abscess
  • Allergic reaction
  • Uneven result / need for further treatment

These are discussed in full, and set out in your consent form, before treatment.

When it can't be done

Fat-dissolving injections are not suitable — or must wait — if any of the following apply:

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Obesity, or wanting weight loss, as the sole aim
  • Infection, inflammation or broken skin in the treatment area
  • Bleeding or blood-clotting disorders
  • Autoimmune conditions (unless medically cleared)
  • Significant liver or kidney disease
  • Known allergy to the product or its ingredients
  • Very loose skin in the area
  • Certain medications or recent illness — always disclose these

Alternatives to consider

Fat-dissolving injections are one option among several. Depending on your goals, other approaches may suit you better:

Non-surgical

  • CoolSculpting / cryolipolysis (fat freezing)
  • HIFU or Titan X (energy-based contouring & tightening)
  • Diet, exercise & lifestyle change

Surgical

  • Liposuction (for larger volumes / faster results)

We'll talk you through the pros and cons of each honestly, and recommend what genuinely suits you — even if that's not fat-dissolving.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a weight-loss treatment?

No. Fat-dissolving injections are for small, stubborn pockets of fat in people who are already at or near their target weight. They are not a weight-loss solution and won't help with a large area or overall weight.

Does it hurt?

You'll feel the injections, and the area is often sore, tender and warm afterwards. Most people find it very manageable. Under-chin treatment in particular can feel tight and swollen for a few days.

How much will I swell?

Quite a lot — swelling is the most noticeable side effect, especially under the chin, where it can look pronounced for several days up to a couple of weeks. It's completely expected and settles as the fat clears.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically 2–4 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the area and how your body responds. We'll give you a personalised plan at your consultation.

When will I see results, and do they last?

The area swells first, then results build over the following weeks, with the full effect at around 8–12 weeks per session. Treated fat cells are permanently reduced, so results are long-lasting — but gaining weight afterwards can affect the outcome.

Is it safe?

When performed by a trained, insured practitioner on suitable candidates it is generally safe, but it is a medical treatment with real risks — including significant swelling, and rarely nerve effects near the jaw or skin damage if injected incorrectly. We assess your suitability carefully and explain every risk before you decide.

How much does it cost?

Price depends on your area, the amount of product and the number of sessions, so we confirm it for you at consultation (£POA). A deposit secures your appointment and comes off your total.

What if it's not right for me?

There's absolutely no pressure. If another treatment — or no treatment — would suit you better, we'll tell you honestly. A consultation is simply expert advice with your questions answered.
