After Your Treatment
Dermal Fillers Aftercare & Recovery
For lips, cheeks, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, temples, tear troughs and non-surgical nose treatments.
Please follow these instructions carefully after your treatment. Correct aftercare helps support healing, reduces avoidable irritation and ensures that any possible complication is recognised promptly.
These instructions apply to hyaluronic-acid facial fillers. Advice given directly by your practitioner for your specific treatment, product or treatment area takes priority over this general guide.
Clinic contact
Contact the clinic promptly if you have any concerns, even if you are unsure whether your symptoms are normal.
For a non-urgent concern, or if you are unsure whether something needs attention, you can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7).
For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, call 999 or attend A&E.

A guide only — everyone heals at their own pace.
Managing your symptoms at home
Most symptoms are mild and settle on their own — here's how to stay comfortable:
Helps
- A wrapped cool compress in short bursts for swelling
- Sleep propped up on your back the first night or two
- Stay hydrated; go easy on salt & alcohol
- Arnica may ease bruising
- Paracetamol if you need pain relief (if normally safe for you)
- Gentle skincare only
Skip
- Rubbing or massaging the area
- Heat — saunas, steam, very hot showers
- Alcohol & strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Ibuprofen/aspirin in the first 24h unless normally prescribed for you
Mild swelling usually peaks around day 2 and settles by ~2 weeks. Contact us for severe or increasing pain, white/blanching or dusky skin, or any change in vision.
Immediately after treatment
Normal
Immediately after facial filler treatment, it is normal to experience some:
Completely normal
- Redness around the injection or cannula entry points
- Mild to moderate swelling
- Tenderness or sensitivity
- Bruising
- Small entry-point marks
- Temporary firmness
- Mild itching
- Minor unevenness caused by swelling
- Awareness of the filler beneath the skin
- Temporary numbness while the anaesthetic wears off
Swelling may become more noticeable later that day or the following morning. Lips and tear troughs are particularly prone to swelling. Bruising can range from a small mark to more extensive discolouration and may take up to approximately two weeks to resolve.
Do not judge your final result immediately after treatment. Swelling can temporarily make the treated area look larger, uneven or firmer than expected.
The first 12 hours
Do
- Keep the treated area clean
- Wash your hands before touching your face
- Drink water and remain appropriately hydrated
- Rest if you feel light-headed after treatment
- Use a clean, cool compress briefly if advised by your practitioner
- Keep your treatment information and clinic contact number available
Avoid
- Applying makeup over the treated area for at least 12 hours
- Touching, rubbing, pressing or repeatedly checking the area
- Applying unclean skincare tools, brushes or sponges
- Facial massage unless specifically instructed
- Picking at injection or cannula entry points
- Excessive facial pressure
Avoiding makeup and unnecessary touching during the initial period may help reduce contamination and irritation at the injection sites.
The first 24–48 hours
Until the initial redness and swelling have settled, avoid:
Please avoid
- Vigorous exercise, heavy gym sessions, running or intense cardio
- Saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and swimming pools
- Sunbeds
- Very hot showers directly against the treated area
- Excessive heat & extreme cold
- Direct pressure over the treated area
- Facial massage, gua sha or facial rollers
- Sleeping directly on the treated area where possible
Heat and vigorous activity can make swelling, redness and bruising more noticeable. Swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms should be avoided until the initial skin reaction has settled.
- Avoid alcohol while significant swelling or bruising is present, as it may make these symptoms more noticeable.
- Do not stop prescribed medication, including blood-thinning medication, unless the clinician who prescribed it has advised you to do so.
- If you require pain relief, use only medication that is normally safe for you and approved by your practitioner, pharmacist or prescriber. Significant or increasing pain is not an expected part of normal filler recovery and must be reported immediately.
Skincare and makeup
After the first 12 hours, you may gently cleanse the skin using clean hands and a mild cleanser. For the first few days:
- Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it
- Use clean towels and pillowcases
- Avoid scrubs and exfoliating brushes
- Avoid chemical exfoliants directly over the entry points
- Avoid retinoids and strong active skincare over irritated skin
- Avoid waxing, threading or hair-removal products over the treated area
- Do not squeeze spots or blemishes close to the injection sites
- Avoid facials, facial massage, microneedling, chemical peels, laser or energy-based treatments over the area until it has healed and your practitioner confirms it is appropriate
Wear appropriate sun protection once the injection sites have closed and the skin can tolerate it.
Managing swelling
Some swelling is expected and may be more noticeable the following morning. To help manage it:
Helps settle swelling
- Keep your head elevated when resting during the first night if comfortable
- Avoid sleeping face-down
- Avoid applying direct pressure to the treated area
- Use a clean, cool compress briefly if advised
- Do not apply frozen products or ice directly to the skin
- Allow the area time to settle before assessing the result
Contact the clinic if swelling
- Continues to increase rather than settle
- Is severe or very painful
- Is affecting breathing, swallowing or vision
- Is accompanied by widespread rash or facial swelling
- Becomes hot, red and increasingly tender
- Persists longer than expected, or returns after initially settling
Persistent or delayed swelling should be reviewed by the practitioner rather than treated at home without advice.
Bruising
Bruising is common after injectable treatment and may extend beyond the precise area treated. Bruising may:
- Appear immediately or develop the following day
- Become darker before it begins to fade
- Look different on each side
- Take up to approximately two weeks to settle
Do not massage, press or repeatedly examine a bruise.
Contact the clinic if bruising is
- Rapidly spreading
- Associated with severe or increasing pain
- Accompanied by unusual skin colour changes
- Associated with cold skin, blistering or skin breakdown
- Accompanied by a rapidly enlarging swelling
Firmness, lumps and unevenness
Temporary firmness, minor lumpiness or unevenness may occur while swelling settles and the filler integrates into the tissue.
Do not attempt to
- Squeeze a lump
- Press the filler into position
- Repeatedly massage the area
- Use a facial roller or massage tool
- Ask another practitioner to manipulate or dissolve the filler without first contacting Layali Clinic
Only massage if you have been given specific instructions for your exact product and treatment area.
Arrange a face-to-face review if you develop
- A new lump after the initial recovery period
- A hard or painful nodule
- A lump that is increasing in size
- Persistent asymmetry
- A lump associated with redness, warmth or swelling
- A lump that appears following illness, infection or dental problems
Filler-related lumps and nodules can appear immediately or may develop weeks or months later, so persistent or delayed changes should be assessed properly.
Area-specific advice
Lip filler
Lips commonly swell more than other facial areas, and swelling may be worse the following morning. Until normal sensation has returned: avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks, take care not to bite or burn the lips, avoid unnecessary pressure or manipulation, and do not massage unless instructed. Contact the clinic if you develop tingling, blistering or symptoms of a cold sore — lip injections can trigger a herpes or cold-sore outbreak in susceptible clients and treatment may be required.
Tear-trough filler
The under-eye area is particularly prone to swelling and bruising. Swelling may be more noticeable the following morning, and bruising can sometimes resemble a black eye. Do not rub or massage beneath the eyes, avoid pressure from sleep masks or tight goggles, and avoid aggressive under-eye skincare until the skin has settled. Contact the clinic if puffiness is persistent, increasing or accompanied by pain or colour change. Persistent swelling here should be reviewed rather than repeatedly massaged at home.
Cheek filler
Mild tenderness, swelling and temporary differences between the two sides may occur. Avoid sleeping directly on the cheeks where possible, do not press or attempt to reshape the filler, and avoid facial massage until cleared by your practitioner.
Chin and jawline filler
Temporary tenderness, firmness and swelling may occur, particularly when touching, speaking or chewing. Avoid resting your chin heavily in your hand, avoid tight chin straps, helmets or garments that press directly on the treated area, and do not massage unless specifically instructed.
Nasolabial and marionette-line filler
The area may feel firm or tender when smiling or moving the mouth. Avoid repeated pressure or manipulation, do not massage unless directed, and report increasing pain, unusual colour change or significant asymmetry.
Temple filler
Some tenderness or mild headache may occur, but severe or increasing pain is not normal. Contact the clinic immediately if you experience severe temple pain, visual disturbance, a drooping eyelid, weakness, confusion or unusual neurological symptoms.
Non-surgical nose filler
The nose is a higher-risk area because of its blood-vessel anatomy. Do not press or manipulate the nose, wear tight glasses over the treated area unless approved, massage the nose, or attempt to correct the result yourself. Contact the clinic immediately for increasing pain, blanching, mottling, unusual colour change or any visual symptom.
Cold sores
Facial injections, particularly around the lips, can trigger a cold-sore outbreak in clients who carry the herpes simplex virus. Contact the clinic if you develop tingling, burning, itching, blisters, crusting, or an outbreak that is more severe than usual.
Do not pick the area or share lip products, towels, cutlery or drinks while an active cold sore is present.
Infection warning signs
Contact us
Infection may not appear immediately — it can develop several days after treatment. Contact Layali Clinic promptly if you develop:
Signs of infection
- Increasing redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness
- Throbbing pain
- Pus or discharge
- An open wound
- Fever or chills
- Feeling generally unwell
- Redness spreading away from the treated area
Do not apply leftover antibiotics or attempt to drain the area yourself.
Vascular occlusion
Urgent
Contact Layali Clinic immediately if you experience
A vascular occlusion — where filler blocks or compresses a blood vessel and reduces blood supply — is rare but requires urgent assessment.
- Severe or increasing pain, or pain that feels disproportionate to the treatment
- Skin turning white or unusually pale
- Grey, blue, purple or mottled skin, or a lace-like/blotchy pattern
- Skin becoming cold
- Blistering or skin breakdown
- Delayed or poor colour return when the skin is pressed
- Increasing numbness or a rapidly worsening appearance
Do not wait for a routine review — early treatment is important, as an untreated occlusion can cause tissue damage, infection and permanent scarring.

Vision or neurological emergency
Call 999
Call 999 immediately if you experience
Visual loss following facial filler is extremely rare but potentially permanent.
- Sudden blurred vision, loss of vision, double vision or new blind spots
- Severe eye pain or a drooping eyelid
- Sudden severe headache
- Facial weakness, or arm or leg weakness
- Difficulty speaking, confusion or collapse
- Any stroke-like symptom
Do not drive yourself to hospital. Tell the emergency team you have recently received facial dermal filler, including the area, approximate time of treatment and product used.
Severe allergic reaction
Call 999
Call 999 immediately if you develop
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Severe facial swelling or difficulty swallowing
- Widespread hives
- Dizziness or collapse
- A rapidly worsening allergic reaction
Do not wait for the clinic to respond before calling emergency services if breathing or swallowing is affected.
Follow-up & final results
Allow the initial swelling and bruising to settle before assessing your result. Your practitioner may arrange a review to:
At your review we
- Assess healing
- Compare your result with your clinical photographs
- Examine any asymmetry or firmness
- Discuss whether additional treatment is appropriate
- Review any concerns
Do not arrange corrective treatment, additional filler or dissolving treatment elsewhere before Layali Clinic has had the opportunity to assess you. Additional filler should not be added simply to correct temporary swelling or early asymmetry.
