After Your Treatment

Buttock & Hip Filler Aftercare & Recovery

For non-surgical buttock enhancement and hip-dip correction using hyaluronic-acid body filler.

Please follow these instructions carefully. Appropriate aftercare helps protect the injection sites, reduce avoidable irritation and ensure that possible complications are identified promptly.

This guide applies to hyaluronic-acid body filler only. It does not apply to Sculptra, Lanluma, fat transfer or surgical BBL procedures. Instructions given by your practitioner for the exact product, volume and area treated take priority over this general guide.

Clinic contact

Contact the clinic promptly if you are concerned about any symptom, even if you are unsure whether it is normal.

For a non-urgent concern, or if you are unsure whether something needs attention, you can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7).

For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, call 999 or attend A&E.

Day by day — what to expect & how to manage it

D0
Day of treatment

Soreness, swelling and feeling light-headed can be normal. Rest, take short gentle walks, wear loose clothing, sip water, and keep a sugary drink such as Lucozade to hand in case your blood sugar dips.

1–2
Days 1–2

Swelling often peaks. Keep dressings clean & dry, avoid pressure on the area, skip exercise, and use a wrapped cool pack only if advised.

3–4
Days 3–4

Tape/dressings usually come off as advised. Gentle showering; keep avoiding heat, prolonged sitting and exercise.

5–7
Days 5–7

Ease back into daily life. Still avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and prolonged direct pressure on the area.

2wk
Week 2

Bruising fades and firmness settles; most normal activity resumes. Book your review.

2–6
Weeks 2–6

Final settling. Report any new lump, migration or asymmetry.

A guide only — everyone heals at their own pace.

Managing your symptoms at home

Temporary swelling, bruising and soreness are expected — here's how to stay comfortable:

Helps

  • A wrapped cool pack in short bursts
  • Loose clothing; change position often and avoid sitting or lying directly on the area
  • Keep a sugary drink (Lucozade) to hand if you feel faint
  • Paracetamol if you need pain relief
  • Gentle short walks

Skip

  • Firm pressure, massage guns & tight shapewear
  • Heat — saunas & hot baths
  • Alcohol & strenuous exercise for 4–7 days
Swelling may rise for 24–48 hours before it settles. Contact us for one side ballooning, severe pain, or pale/blue/mottled skin.

What is normal after treatment?

Normal

Immediately after buttock or hip filler, it is common to experience:

Completely normal

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness or soreness
  • Bruising
  • Redness around the entry points
  • Mild warmth
  • Tightness or pressure
  • Temporary firmness
  • Mild itching
  • Small cannula-entry marks
  • Minor spotting on the dressing
  • Temporary lumpiness
  • Temporary unevenness caused by swelling
  • One side appearing more swollen than the other
  • Awareness of the filler beneath the skin
  • Mild discomfort when sitting, walking or changing position

Swelling may increase during the first 24–48 hours before it begins to settle. Bruising may become darker before fading and can extend beyond the exact area treated. Increasing pain, delayed redness with heat, or persistent swelling must be reported to the practitioner.

Do not judge your final result immediately. The area may initially look larger, firmer or less even than expected.
Blood sugar & feeling faint. Feeling light-headed or faint can happen after treatment — especially longer body-filler sessions — as blood sugar can dip. Keep a sugary drink such as Lucozade or a snack to hand, sit or lie down if you feel faint, and arrange for someone to accompany you home.

Immediately after treatment

Do

  • Keep the treated area and dressings clean
  • Wash your hands before touching the area
  • Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing
  • Rest and move carefully
  • Drink water normally
  • Keep your clinic emergency information available
  • Follow any specific positioning instructions from your practitioner
  • Take short, gentle walks around your home to maintain normal movement

Do not

  • Rub, scratch, press or repeatedly examine the area
  • Attempt to move or reshape the filler
  • Apply creams, oils or body lotions over open entry points
  • Remove tape or dressings unless instructed
  • Apply unclean objects or reusable ice packs directly to the skin
  • Massage unless specifically prescribed
  • Allow another person to massage or manipulate the treated area

Dressings & cannula entry points

If tape or dressings have been applied:

Some body-filler protocols advise keeping treatment tape dry and in place for approximately three days, but this depends on the product and technique used. Follow the instructions provided for your specific treatment.

Contact the clinic if an entry point

  • Continues bleeding
  • Opens or begins leaking
  • Produces yellow, green or unpleasant-smelling fluid
  • Becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful
  • Develops a blister or open wound

Sitting & direct pressure

For the first four to seven days, minimise prolonged or forceful pressure over the injected areas unless your practitioner has given different instructions for the product used.

During early recovery

  • Avoid sitting continuously for long periods
  • Change position regularly
  • Avoid hard chairs where possible
  • Do not sit directly on a freshly treated area for longer than necessary
  • Avoid leaning repeatedly against the treated hips
  • Avoid driving long distances during the early recovery period
  • Do not use a tight support cushion or BBL pillow unless approved
  • Avoid any activity that strongly compresses, rubs or repeatedly impacts the area

The objective is to reduce unnecessary pressure and friction — not to remain completely immobile.

Sleeping position

During the initial recovery period:

Do not remain in an uncomfortable position that causes pain, numbness or breathing difficulty. Change position carefully when needed.

Clothing & compression garments

Wear loose, breathable clothing that does not dig into the treatment area. Avoid tight jeans, tight leggings, shapewear, waist trainers, tight underwear seams, restrictive gym clothing, tight compression garments, and belts or straps pressing over the entry points. Loose clothing helps reduce friction and unwanted pressure.

Compression garments

Do not automatically wear a compression garment after HA filler. Only wear one if your practitioner has specifically recommended it, the garment has been checked for appropriate fit, you have been told how long to wear it, and it does not apply excessive pressure over the injected filler.

A garment that is too tight may cause pain, pressure, friction or altered contour. Contact the clinic if it causes increasing discomfort, numbness, skin-colour change or deep marks.

Washing & personal hygiene

Follow the instructions given for your dressings. Until the entry points have closed:

Please avoid

  • Soaking the area
  • Baths
  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Communal water facilities
  • Scrubbing or exfoliating
  • Fragranced products over the entry points

Keep the area clean and pat the surrounding skin dry rather than rubbing. If you have been told to keep tape dry, avoid shower water directly over it for the stated period. Manufacturer guidance may advise avoiding showering directly over taped body-filler entry sites and avoiding water or pressure for several days.

Exercise & physical activity

Avoid strenuous exercise for approximately four to seven days, or longer if you still have significant swelling, pain or bruising. This includes:

Avoid

  • Running, cycling, spinning
  • Squats, lunges, hip thrusts, glute bridges
  • Heavy weightlifting & HIIT
  • Contact sports, horse riding, vigorous dancing
  • Activities involving repeated sitting or impact
  • Strenuous sexual activity that places pressure on the treated area

Gentle walking is usually appropriate unless your practitioner advises otherwise. Return to exercise gradually.

Stop & contact the clinic if activity causes

  • Increasing pain
  • Sudden swelling
  • New asymmetry
  • Bleeding or fluid from an entry point
  • Skin-colour changes
  • A new painful lump

Heat, sun & cold exposure

Until the initial swelling, redness and tenderness have settled, avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, sunbeds, intense sun exposure, hot waxing over the area, very hot baths, heated seats, heated blankets directly over the area, ice baths and extreme cold exposure.

Do not apply ice directly to the skin. If your practitioner recommends cooling, use a clean, wrapped cool pack for short periods without applying strong pressure.

Alcohol, smoking & medication

Alcohol: avoid for at least 24 hours and while significant bruising or swelling remains, as it may make these symptoms more noticeable.

Smoking & nicotine: avoid or reduce smoking, vaping and nicotine during healing where possible. Do not smoke while lying in a position that places pressure on the treated area.

Medication:

Severe, increasing or disproportionate pain should not simply be masked with pain relief. Contact the clinic immediately.

Massage instructions

Massage requirements vary according to the product used, injection plane, volume injected, treatment area, practitioner technique and immediate clinical findings. Some HA body-filler manufacturers recommend a specific massage routine, while other situations require avoiding manipulation. Therefore:

Unless specifically instructed

  • Do not massage unless your practitioner has told you to
  • Do not copy an online massage routine
  • Do not use massage guns, rollers, gua sha tools or electrical massagers
  • Do not ask a massage therapist to manipulate the filler
  • Do not aggressively press lumps or uneven areas

Where massage is prescribed, your practitioner should provide the date to begin, the exact area, pressure to use, duration, frequency, the date to stop, and the symptoms that mean you should stop and contact the clinic. Stop massage and seek advice if it causes increasing pain, redness, heat, swelling, bruising or skin-colour change.

Swelling & bruising

Swelling may be noticeable for several days and can initially make the area appear uneven. To support recovery: avoid pressure and friction, wear loose clothing, rest from strenuous exercise, use a clean wrapped cool pack only if recommended, and allow time for both sides to settle. Do not compare the result repeatedly during early healing or book an immediate top-up based on swelling-related asymmetry.

Bruising may develop immediately or the following day, darken before fading, extend beyond the treatment area, and take approximately two weeks to resolve.

Contact the clinic if swelling or bruising

  • Is rapidly increasing or becomes very tense
  • Is associated with severe pain
  • Is accompanied by numbness or weakness
  • Is associated with pale, grey, blue, purple or black skin
  • Is accompanied by significant bleeding
  • Returns after previously settling, or does not improve as expected

Firmness, lumps & asymmetry

Mild temporary firmness and unevenness may occur while swelling settles and the filler integrates.

Do not

  • Squeeze lumps
  • Attempt to push filler into another position
  • Use a massage gun
  • Ask another clinic to dissolve or manipulate the area without first contacting Layali Clinic
  • Add more filler before the result has been properly reviewed

Arrange a face-to-face assessment if you develop

  • A painful lump
  • A hard area that is increasing
  • A warm or red lump
  • A new lump after the area had settled
  • Persistent or worsening asymmetry
  • A lump associated with fever or illness
  • A soft fluid-filled swelling
  • Filler appearing to move away from the original area
  • Skin thinning or discolouration over a lump

Lumps may arise immediately or develop later — persistent or delayed lumps require clinical assessment.

Infection warning signs

Contact us

Infection can develop several days or occasionally longer after treatment. Contact Layali Clinic promptly if you experience:

Signs of infection

  • Redness that is spreading or worsening
  • Increasing heat, swelling or pain (throbbing)
  • Pus, or yellow/green discharge
  • An unpleasant smell
  • An open wound
  • A soft or fluid-filled swelling
  • Fever, chills, or feeling weak/generally unwell
  • Red streaks spreading from the area
  • Symptoms that improve and then worsen again

Do not squeeze or drain the area, insert a needle, apply leftover antibiotics, cover a draining wound with cosmetics, or delay seeking help because you believe it is ordinary swelling.

Reduced blood supply & tissue damage

Urgent

Contact Layali Clinic immediately if you experience

A vascular occlusion or significant compression of a blood vessel is rare but requires urgent assessment.
  • Severe or increasing pain, or pain disproportionate to the treatment
  • Skin becoming unusually pale or white
  • Grey, blue, purple or mottled skin, or a lace-like/blotchy pattern
  • Skin becoming cold
  • Blistering, skin breakdown or an open sore
  • Darkening or blackening skin
  • Poor colour return after pressing the skin
  • Increasing numbness or a rapidly worsening appearance
An untreated occlusion can lead to tissue loss, infection and permanent scarring — early treatment is important. Do not wait for a routine review appointment. If you cannot reach the clinic and symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, attend A&E.

Chest, breathing or neurological emergency

Call 999

Call 999 immediately if you develop

Very rare but serious complications may involve material entering the circulation or another acute medical event.
  • Sudden shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • New or severe chest pain
  • Coughing blood
  • Sudden collapse, severe dizziness or loss of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Severe unexplained headache
  • Any rapidly developing neurological symptom
Do not drive yourself to hospital. Tell the emergency team you recently received HA buttock or hip filler — the date/time, treatment area, product used (if known), approximate volume, and the clinic's contact details.

Severe allergic reaction

Call 999

Call 999 immediately if you experience

  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Swelling of the tongue or throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Widespread hives
  • Rapid facial swelling
  • Severe dizziness or collapse
  • A rapidly worsening allergic reaction
Do not wait for a clinic response before calling emergency services when breathing or swallowing is affected.

Delayed reactions

Some filler-related problems can develop weeks or months after treatment. Contact the clinic if you later develop a new lump or nodule, recurrent swelling, redness or tenderness, increasing firmness, filler migration, skin discolouration, persistent itching, pain after the area had previously settled, or symptoms following an infection or significant illness.

Tell any healthcare professional assessing the area that you have had HA body filler. Provide the product and batch information from your treatment record where possible.

Other treatments & procedures

During the initial healing period, avoid massage treatments over the area, lymphatic drainage over the filler (unless approved), body-contouring machines, radiofrequency, HIFU, cryolipolysis, endolaser, laser treatment, microneedling, injections into the same area, surgical procedures affecting the area, and waxing over healing entry points.

Do not undergo another treatment over the buttocks or hips until Layali Clinic has confirmed that the filler has settled and the skin has healed. Tell future practitioners that HA filler is present before they perform injections, surgery or energy-based treatment in the area.

Follow-up & final results

Results are visible immediately, but the early appearance includes swelling and may not represent the final result. The area should be reviewed only after sufficient settling time. Your follow-up may include:

At your review we

  • Assess swelling and healing
  • Compare with your clinical photographs
  • Examine firmness or asymmetry
  • Confirm entry points have healed
  • Discuss whether another staged session is appropriate
  • Review any concerns

Do not assume every uneven area requires additional filler — natural asymmetry, swelling, skin laxity and skeletal structure may remain. Do not arrange corrective treatment or filler dissolving elsewhere before Layali Clinic has had an opportunity to assess you, unless urgent medical circumstances require another clinician to intervene.

When to contact Layali Clinic

Contact the clinic if:

Telephone advice and photographs may help with initial triage, but do not replace a face-to-face assessment where a complication is suspected.
