After Your Treatment

Breast Filler Aftercare & Recovery

For non-surgical breast enhancement using hyaluronic-acid body filler.

Please follow these instructions carefully after your treatment. Appropriate aftercare helps protect the injection sites, supports recovery and ensures that possible complications are recognised promptly.

This guide applies only to hyaluronic-acid breast filler. It does not apply to breast implants, fat transfer, surgical breast augmentation, Sculptra or other collagen-stimulating products. Instructions given by your practitioner for the exact product, volume and injection technique used take priority over this general guide.

Clinic contact

Contact the clinic promptly if you are concerned about any symptom, even if you are unsure whether it is normal.

Call 07787 708200 Message on WhatsApp

For a non-urgent concern, or if you are unsure whether something needs attention, you can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7).

For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, call 999 or attend A&E.

Day by day — what to expect & how to manage it

D0
Day of treatment

Soreness, swelling and feeling light-headed can be normal. Rest, wear loose clothing (no wired or tight bras), sip water, and keep a sugary drink such as Lucozade to hand in case your blood sugar dips. Arrange for someone to accompany you home.

1–2
Days 1–2

Swelling often peaks. Keep dressings clean & dry, sleep on your back, avoid pressure on the breasts and skip exercise.

3–4
Days 3–4

Dressings usually come off as advised. Gentle showering; keep avoiding heat, chest pressure and exercise.

5–7
Days 5–7

Ease back into daily life; still avoid chest and upper-body exercise, saunas and firm pressure.

2wk
Week 2

Bruising fades and firmness settles; most activity resumes. Book your review.

2–6
Weeks 2–6

Final settling. Report any new lump, migration or asymmetry. Filler is not a substitute for breast screening.

A guide only — everyone heals at their own pace.

Managing your symptoms at home

Temporary swelling, bruising and soreness are expected — here's how to stay comfortable:

Helps

  • A wrapped cool pack in short bursts
  • A soft, non-wired bra only if you need support
  • Sleep on your back
  • Keep a sugary drink to hand if you feel faint
  • Paracetamol if needed; gentle movement

Skip

  • Chest pressure & underwires
  • Breast massage
  • Heat over the chest
  • Alcohol & chest/upper-body exercise early on
Swelling may rise for 24–48 hours. Contact us for rapidly increasing or one-sided swelling, severe pain, or breathing difficulty.

What is normal after treatment?

Normal

During the initial recovery period, it may be normal to experience:

Completely normal

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness or soreness
  • Bruising
  • Redness around the entry points
  • Mild warmth
  • Tightness or pressure
  • Temporary firmness
  • Awareness of the filler beneath the skin
  • Small needle or cannula entry-point marks
  • Minor spotting on the dressing
  • Temporary lumpiness
  • Temporary differences between the breasts
  • One breast appearing more swollen than the other
  • Mild discomfort when moving the arms or changing position
  • Temporary changes in shape while swelling settles

Swelling may become more noticeable during the first 24–48 hours. Bruising can develop immediately or during the following day and may take approximately two weeks to resolve. Increasing pain, delayed redness with heat, persistent swelling or worsening symptoms must be reported to your practitioner.

Do not judge your final result immediately. Initial swelling and firmness may temporarily affect the shape, size and symmetry of the breasts.
Blood sugar & feeling faint. Feeling light-headed or faint can happen after treatment — especially longer body-filler sessions — as blood sugar can dip. Keep a sugary drink such as Lucozade or a snack to hand, sit or lie down if you feel faint, and have someone accompany you home.

Immediately after treatment

Do

  • Keep the treatment area and dressings clean
  • Wash your hands before touching the breasts or dressings
  • Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing
  • Rest and move carefully
  • Drink water normally
  • Follow the positioning instructions given by your practitioner
  • Keep your treatment card and clinic contact information available
  • Arrange for someone to accompany you home if you feel faint or uncomfortable

Do not

  • Rub, scratch, press or repeatedly examine the breasts
  • Attempt to move, reshape or redistribute the filler
  • Massage the breasts unless specifically instructed
  • Remove dressings before the advised time
  • Apply creams, oils, body lotions or makeup over open entry points
  • Apply unclean reusable ice packs directly to the skin
  • Allow another person or therapist to manipulate the breasts

Dressings & entry points

Leave any tape or dressings in place for the period specified by your practitioner. While dressings are present, keep them clean and dry, do not repeatedly lift them to inspect the skin, do not reapply a used dressing, wash your hands before changing a dressing, use only clean replacement dressings recommended by the clinic, and avoid applying adhesive directly over irritated or blistered skin. A small amount of blood spotting immediately after treatment may occur.

Contact the clinic if an entry point

  • Continues bleeding
  • Opens or begins leaking
  • Produces yellow, green or unpleasant-smelling fluid
  • Becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful
  • Develops a blister or an open wound
  • Does not appear to be healing

Do not squeeze, probe or attempt to drain an entry point.

Showering & hygiene

Follow the specific instructions given for your dressings. Until the entry points have closed:

Please avoid

  • Soaking the area & baths
  • Swimming pools & hot tubs
  • Saunas & steam rooms
  • Scrubbing or exfoliating the breasts
  • Fragranced products over the entry points
  • Deodorant, perfume, fake tan or body oil over healing entry points

Keep the breasts clean and dry, pat the surrounding skin dry rather than rubbing, and use clean towels and clothing.

Bras & clothing

Wear loose, breathable clothing that does not rub or compress the breasts. Avoid underwired bras, push-up bras, tight sports bras, very tight compression bras, shapewear pressing against the breasts, tight tops, garments with seams pressing over entry points, and clothing that is difficult to remove without pulling across the chest.

Support garments

Do not automatically wear a compression bra after breast filler. Only wear a specific bra or support garment if your practitioner has recommended it for your treatment, confirmed the correct fit, explained how long to wear it, and confirmed it will not apply excessive pressure to the filler.

Contact the clinic if a bra causes

  • Increasing pain
  • Deep pressure marks
  • Numbness
  • Skin-colour changes
  • Increasing asymmetry
  • A visible indentation
  • Movement or distortion of the treated area

Sleeping position

During the initial recovery period, avoid sleeping directly on your breasts and sleep on your back where comfortable. Keep your upper body slightly elevated during the first night if advised, use clean bed linen, avoid very heavy bedding pressing against the breasts, and do not place a hot-water bottle or heated blanket directly over the area.

Do not remain in a position that causes pain, numbness, breathing difficulty or significant discomfort.

Pressure & handling

Avoid strong or prolonged pressure over the breasts during early recovery. This includes:

Avoid

  • Firm massage
  • Repeated squeezing or checking
  • Lying face-down
  • Tight hugs that compress the chest
  • Carrying objects tightly against the breasts
  • Heavy straps crossing the treatment area
  • Chest-binding garments
  • Massage tables with chest pressure
  • Contact sports & activities involving impact to the chest

Do not ask another practitioner to manipulate, inject or dissolve the filler without first contacting Layali Clinic, unless emergency medical circumstances require another clinician to intervene.

Exercise & physical activity

Avoid strenuous physical activity until the initial swelling, tenderness and entry-point irritation have settled and your practitioner has confirmed it is appropriate to resume. During early recovery, avoid:

Avoid

  • Heavy weightlifting, chest exercises, push-ups, bench presses
  • Running & high-intensity interval training
  • Vigorous upper-body exercise
  • Contact sports, swimming, horse riding
  • Repetitive arm movements that cause breast pain
  • Strenuous sexual activity involving pressure on the breasts

Gentle walking is generally preferable to remaining completely immobile. Return to exercise gradually.

Stop & contact the clinic if activity causes

  • Increasing pain
  • Sudden swelling
  • New asymmetry
  • Bleeding or fluid leakage
  • Skin-colour changes
  • A new painful lump
  • A sudden change in breast shape

Heat & cold exposure

Until the initial swelling, redness and tenderness have settled, avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, sunbeds, very hot baths, intense sun exposure, heated pads, heated blankets directly over the breasts, hot waxing over the area, ice baths and extreme cold exposure.

Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Where cooling has been recommended, use a clean, wrapped cool pack for short periods without applying firm pressure.

Alcohol, smoking & medication

Alcohol: avoid for at least 24 hours and while significant bruising or swelling remains, as it may make these symptoms more noticeable.

Smoking & nicotine: avoid or reduce smoking, vaping and nicotine during healing where possible.

Medication:

Severe, increasing or disproportionate pain must not simply be covered with pain relief. Contact Layali Clinic immediately.

Massage instructions

Massage requirements depend on the exact filler product, the volume injected, the injection plane, the practitioner's technique and the clinical findings immediately after treatment. Therefore:

Unless specifically instructed

  • Do not massage unless instructed
  • Do not copy a massage routine from social media
  • Do not use massage guns, rollers or electrical massagers
  • Do not aggressively press lumps or uneven areas
  • Do not arrange lymphatic drainage over the breasts without approval
  • Do not ask a massage therapist to manipulate the filler

Where massage is prescribed, your practitioner should explain when to begin, where to massage, the pressure to use, how long and how often to perform it, when to stop, and which symptoms mean you must stop and contact the clinic. Stop immediately if massage causes increasing pain, redness, heat, swelling, bruising or skin-colour changes.

Swelling & bruising

Swelling may temporarily make the breasts appear larger than expected, unequal, firmer than expected, higher or differently shaped, or uneven around the edges. To support recovery: avoid unnecessary pressure, wear loose clothing, avoid strenuous exercise, follow the clinic's positioning guidance, and allow both breasts time to settle. Do not repeatedly measure or compare them, or request an immediate top-up based on early swelling.

Contact the clinic if swelling

  • Is rapidly increasing or becomes very tense
  • Is associated with severe pain
  • Is significantly worse on one side
  • Is accompanied by breathing difficulty
  • Is accompanied by pale, grey, blue, purple or black skin
  • Returns after initially settling
  • Is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell
  • Is not improving as expected

Firmness, lumps & asymmetry

Temporary firmness and minor unevenness may occur while the filler and swelling settle.

Do not

  • Squeeze a lump
  • Push filler into another position
  • Use a massage gun
  • Repeatedly press the breasts
  • Attempt to drain a swelling
  • Arrange additional filler before the result has been reviewed

Arrange a face-to-face assessment if you develop

  • A painful lump
  • A hard area that is becoming larger
  • A warm or red lump
  • A soft or fluid-filled swelling
  • A lump that develops after the initial recovery period
  • Persistent or worsening asymmetry
  • Filler that appears to have moved
  • Skin thinning or colour change over a lump
  • A lump associated with fever or illness
  • A new lump in the breast or armpit
A new breast lump must not automatically be assumed to be filler. It may require assessment by your GP, a breast clinic or an imaging specialist.

Infection warning signs

Contact us

Infection may develop days, weeks or occasionally longer after treatment. Contact Layali Clinic promptly if you experience:

Signs of infection

  • Redness that is spreading or worsening
  • Increasing heat, swelling or pain (throbbing)
  • Pus, or yellow/green discharge
  • An unpleasant smell
  • An open wound
  • A soft fluid-filled swelling
  • Fever, chills, or feeling weak/generally unwell
  • Red streaks spreading from the area
  • Symptoms that settle and then worsen again

Do not squeeze or drain the area, insert a needle, apply leftover antibiotics, cover drainage with cosmetics, or delay contacting the clinic. Suspected infection may require a face-to-face assessment, prescription treatment, ultrasound, aspiration, drainage, specialist referral or hospital treatment.

Hyaluronidase is not an automatic treatment for an infected area. UK product information states it should not be administered at a site of infection or malignancy, and rare severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported.

Reduced blood supply & tissue damage

Urgent

Contact Layali Clinic immediately if you experience

A vascular occlusion or significant compression of a blood vessel is rare but requires urgent assessment.
  • Severe or increasing pain, or pain disproportionate to the treatment
  • Skin becoming unusually pale or white
  • Grey, blue, purple or mottled skin, or a lace-like/blotchy pattern
  • Skin becoming cold
  • Blistering, skin breakdown or an open sore
  • Darkening or blackening skin
  • Increasing numbness
  • Poor colour return after pressing the skin, or a rapidly worsening appearance
Reduced blood supply can cause tissue damage, scarring and secondary infection if not treated promptly. Do not wait for a routine review appointment. If you cannot reach the clinic and symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, attend A&E.

Rapid bleeding or haematoma

Urgent

Contact Layali Clinic urgently if you develop

  • Rapidly increasing swelling
  • One breast suddenly becoming much larger
  • A very tense or painful breast
  • Extensive rapidly spreading bruising
  • Continued bleeding
  • Dizziness, weakness or fainting
Call 999 if the swelling is severe, rapidly increasing or accompanied by collapse, breathing difficulty or significant weakness.

Breathing, chest or neurological emergency

Call 999

Call 999 immediately if you experience

  • Sudden shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • New or severe chest pain
  • Coughing blood
  • Sudden visual disturbance
  • Severe dizziness, collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Difficulty speaking or confusion
  • A severe unexplained headache
  • Any rapidly developing neurological symptom
Do not drive yourself to hospital. Tell the emergency team you recently received HA breast filler — the date/time, exact product (if known), volume placed in each breast, injection areas, and your practitioner and clinic details.

Severe allergic reaction

Call 999

Call 999 immediately if you develop

  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Swelling of the tongue or throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Widespread hives
  • Severe facial swelling
  • Dizziness or collapse
  • A rapidly worsening allergic reaction
Do not wait for the clinic to respond when breathing or swallowing is affected.

Breast screening & future medical care

Important

Breast filler can remain visible during mammography, ultrasound or MRI and may make interpretation of breast imaging more difficult. Historical MHRA safety guidance concerning a breast HA filler warned that injected material could reduce mammogram quality and advised clients to provide radiology teams with their injection-treatment card.

You must tell every future GP, breast clinician, radiographer, radiologist, surgeon, mammography team, ultrasound practitioner and MRI practitioner that you have had breast filler. Provide them with the product name, manufacturer, batch or lot number, treatment date, volume placed in each breast, injection location, and practitioner and clinic details.

Keep your treatment card permanently, even after the cosmetic result appears to have reduced. Breast filler is not a substitute for breast screening — continue attending any routine screening or follow-up recommended for you.

New breast symptoms

Do not assume that every new lump or breast change is caused by filler. Contact your GP or an appropriate breast-health service if you develop:

See your GP / breast service for

  • A new breast lump or a lump in the armpit
  • Nipple discharge or bloody nipple discharge
  • New nipple inversion
  • Skin dimpling or skin thickening
  • Persistent breast rash
  • An unexplained change in breast shape
  • Persistent one-sided breast pain
  • Any breast symptom that concerns you

Also inform Layali Clinic so that your filler-treatment information can be made available to the assessing healthcare professional. Do not delay medical assessment while waiting for a cosmetic review.

Future breast procedures

Tell future practitioners that breast filler is present before undergoing mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI, breast biopsy, breast surgery, breast implants, breast uplift or reduction, fat transfer, treatment for breast cancer, injections into the chest, or energy-based treatment over the breasts. Breast filler may affect treatment planning and may require additional imaging or specialist assessment.

Delayed reactions

Some filler-related complications may appear weeks or months after treatment. Contact Layali Clinic if you later develop a new lump or nodule, recurrent swelling, increasing firmness, redness or warmth, delayed breast pain, filler migration, skin discolouration, persistent itching, a fluid-filled swelling, symptoms after an infection, vaccination or significant illness, or a visible change after the breasts had previously settled.

A photograph may assist initial triage, but it does not replace a face-to-face assessment where a complication is suspected.

Other treatments

Do not undergo another procedure over the breasts until Layali Clinic has confirmed the area has healed. Avoid arranging breast massage, lymphatic drainage over the filler, radiofrequency, HIFU, endolaser, microneedling, laser treatment, additional injections, additional filler, filler dissolving, or surgical procedures affecting the breasts. The appropriate waiting period depends on the treatment performed, the product used and your recovery.

Follow-up & final results

The early appearance includes swelling and should not be treated as the final result. Your follow-up may include:

At your review we

  • Examine the breasts
  • Assess swelling and healing
  • Review entry points
  • Compare with clinical photographs
  • Assess firmness or asymmetry
  • Review any lumps or discomfort
  • Discuss whether further imaging is required
  • Discuss whether another staged treatment is appropriate

Do not assume that every difference between the breasts requires additional filler — natural breast asymmetry, skin laxity, skeletal differences and swelling may remain. Do not arrange corrective treatment elsewhere before Layali Clinic has had an opportunity to assess you, unless urgent medical circumstances require another clinician to intervene.

Your treatment card

Important

You should receive a written record containing the product name, manufacturer, batch or lot number, expiry date, treatment date, volume used in the right breast, volume used in the left breast, your practitioner's name and the clinic contact details.

Keep this information permanently and show it to healthcare professionals before breast screening, investigation or surgery. You should have written information about the product used, know how to obtain help outside normal clinic hours, and have sufficient information for another healthcare professional to take over your care.
